Twenty minute blocks

I tried my quiet day today.  Actually, I didn't think of it until I'd done some really loud stuff, like listen to Morning Edition and go to aerobics.  I'm not trying to become a different person though, just find some balance.

So there's no music with me as I work home alone today.  In my ten minutes to and from the grocery store, I involuntarily turned on the radio no less than seven times.

I set aside a two hour chunk of time to work on editing my book today, but have been surprised at my own level of self distraction.  A few minutes of work, a few minutes of texts, a few minutes of work, a few minutes checking in on Facebook, a few minutes of work and A CUPCAKE???  I was halfway into the cupcake before I realized that I wasn't even hungry.  Unfortunately, I can't let food go to waste.

So I'm setting my timer now to work in 20 minute blocks.  Twenty minutes without checking social media or eating something.  It sounds easy enough.  I am working on changing patterns without all the self loathing.  It's a challenge.

Gina was so right last week when she said in class that once we are aware of something, then it becomes a choice.  And we become responsible.  This mindfulness is certainly not all unicorns and rainbows.

Unicorns

Katie,

Wow, we must have been on the same wavelength today. I was beyond distracted at home, at work, in the car...

I do the same thing - I set out to accomplish a project and suddenly "Shiny light, shiny light" and I'm off to something completely unrelated. I need to work on that...

Great post.

Debra

I set my timer for 20 minutes

I set my timer for 20 minutes and remind myself not to do anything until it goes off.  Still, I found myself wandering around the house and even outside once.  Ah.  Work in progress.

:)
