Day 1: My New Middle Name

When I finally focused on page 48 (6th time was a charm) and finished my reading for Week 1, I was left with one major theme: it’s okay to start over whenever your mind strays. Well, after today’s meditation session, you can call me Kira “Start Over” Licata. (Sorry Mom, Marie was nice, but Start Over just has a special ring to it).

Okay, I have a confession to make: I was really excited to learn how to meditate, but I was equally as excited to have a reason to start blogging. Clearly I didn't realize that blogging and meditating are probably the two worst things to start at the same time. Needless to say, my blogging mind was running wild this morning. Let me paint a picture for you:

It’s 7:15am, I’m in my pjs in Pete’s music studio (the warmest and coziest room in the house). I’m sitting comfortably on two cushions on the floor, and Sharon Salzberg’s guided meditation is playing. My eyes are closed, my spine is straight, my arms are resting comfortably on my legs. I breathe in through my nose, thinking “in”, and out through my nose, thinking “out”. In through my nose thinking “i- OMG talk about a challenge!…no, that won’t work I used challenge as a theme yesterday… OUCH my hips, meditating is painful!…no, that sounds like I’m whining...Day 1 Down!…no that’s just boring and generic." Before I had even let out my second breath, I was already writing this blog. This is when Week One’s theme came in handy: I simply told myself to start over, and over, and over, and over.

20 minutes and a new middle name later, I made it. Day 1 down.
