Balance and staying focused during mediation

I found the Day 6 lesson interesting as it looked at the balance between focus and being in a relaxed state while meditating, and also mentions that we can apply this same balance to work, relationships, etc. During this meditation i tried to concentrate on my breathe as i meditated, but i found it hard to do so.  So i tried other techniques and i discovered that i can maintain my focus much better when meditating if i say positive words on the in-breathe, such as love, and say words for emotions/feelings i want less of in my life now, such as despair, on the out breath.
