Body Awareness: A Teacher and Her Class of Children

During a body scan, with voices from many internal locations, my body seems to ask, “Did you know that you live here?

As a former teacher, it then occurs to me that the choir of bodily sensations is much like a classroom full of children. I attend to those in immediate need. I listen to and check in on each one in turn, letting them know that I am here for them. I want them to know that they are recognized and safe and that there is room for them.

I listen to myself and give myself the consideration I would a child in my care — I sense when I am tired, ready for a new challenge, frightened or in need of some free play.
