Counting the breath is helpful to me in many ways. It simplifies the meditation, it makes it familiar. It makes it effortless. It’s something comfortable. One. Two. Three. I’m meditating in a new space, it’s the first time I’ve meditated since moving here. I left a home, a son ready to go out into the world on his own, a cat and bird. I’ve gained a wonderful man, a teenage boy and a one minute commute to work by foot. Although it’s all been positive change, it’s change nonetheless. Counting breaths is neutral ground. It’s perfect for this time in my life.
