Mental noting is a useful technique for me. As I reflect on my meditation practice today, it’s funny to me how long it takes me to notice when I’ve wandered away in thought.
During today’s practice, I was simply sitting and feeling the breath go in and out of my nose. Then before I even realized it, I was thinking about a conversation I had with a family member. And then for what felt like 10 minutes, I was grappling with what I should have said and not said to them. Somehow I finally snapped out of it and noted, “thinking”. Maybe as I practice more, this moment of realization will quicken and sharpen. It’s comforting to know that I can always come back to the breath, and as Sharon says, begin again.
