For over four decades, Sharon Salzberg has taught the ancient practices of mindfulness and metta (loving kindness) that the Buddha taught as an antidote to fear. Congressman Ryan has encouraged us all to engage in voting/political action with compassion and connection—qualities they both consider essential to a vibrant democracy. In her newly released book, “Real Love: The Art of Mindful Connection,” Salzberg writes “Awareness and love are qualities we can rely on moment to moment. They help us find ourselves when we’ve lost our way. They protect us during storms…and help us let go of our preconceived notions of how life should be at any given time.” Congressman Ryan begins his landmark book “Mindful Nation” with “American has always been defined by how we have responded to crisis, and then explores how mindfulness can boost our capacities to act skillfully in response.
