off the cushion

walking meditation

today i decided to take my meditation

off the cushion

a slow walk in the neighborhood

surrounded by the chittering of (1,000?) birds

all hidden from view

a patch of talking bushes and trees

stopping and starting

cued by the baton of some cosmic conductor

the crunch

of industrial “ice breaker” salt

beneath my boots

the muscles of my legs engaging

as the hill grows steep

stepping over walls of snow

into slush puddles

warm breezes cool

as i inhale

light dances on the snow

a siren in the distance

my full bladder nudges

and thich nhat hanh’s words

echo in my mind:

i have arrived

may we all be safe.  may we all be healthy.  may we all be happy.  may we all be in peace
