28 Day Challenge aspen leaf pub dom

SCENE: Susan sits on her cushion.

After a few breaths of stillness…

SUSAN’S MIND (with the excitement of an 8-year-old): Hey! I’ve got a great idea: let’s plan what we’re going to make for lunch and what we’re going to wear and…

SUSAN: Not right now. Right now, we’re breathing.

After a breath or two…

SUSAN’S MIND: I know, I know! We could make a list! We love making a list!

SUSAN: Right now, we’re breathing.

SUSAN’S MIND: Oh, come ON! We’re just going to sit here??

SUSAN: Do I have to read the poem?

SUSAN’S MIND: No, you don’t have to read the poem.

Another few breaths…

SUSAN’S MIND: How about if we just think about what to say before class? That would actually be productive and interesting and…

SUSAN: I have to read you the poem, don’t I?

SUSAN’S MIND: It’s just that breathing and sitting here is so boring!

SUSAN raises an eyebrow at her mind and gets out the poem. She clears her throat and reads.

SUSAN:
Grassblade Experiencing by Paul Reps
This is the law.
No sames.
No same leaves pebbles persons places times faces grasses.
Whoever disobeys the law
Gets bored.

After a silence

SUSAN’S MIND: The law bugs me.

SUSAN: Yes, well, so you’ve said. We’re breathing now.

FADE TO MEDITATING…
