I have found body scans to be a helpful meditation tool. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis 3 1/2 years ago. This meditation tool has helped me get in touch with my body and focus on the areas that are stressed and recognize those that are not. Using the body scan method I am able to be gentler with myself when I am not able to move as quickly as I used to, or open a jar without an assistive device, or have to wear a pullover instead of a button up shirt due to my fingers not working as well as I’d like. Body scanning brings me to what I can do now and helps me to accept the present and act accordingly whereas in the past I’d get angry over not being able to put on a certain shirt – and dwell in what I used to be able to do. I’m not saying I’m 100% focused in the present and not hanging on to the past – but this technique has helped me be more mindful of my reality without grasping at old scripts or dwelling on what may be in the future.
