It’s the next to the last day of the challenge. Today’s lesson focuses on compassion and how we can reframe our difficult emotions from bad or wrong to painful or suffering. The next step after the reframing is focusing on and recognizing how the emotion as our being in pain or suffering and how that feels versus when we tell ourselves we’re bad, or wrong to have that emotion. This lesson is an example of bringing compassion to ourselves first, before we then move that compassion to others. If someone else is angry, or jealous, instead of thinking of those emotions as bad/wrong, if we think of it as the person is in pain or suffering – how does that change our reactions?
For me, an important component of today’s lesson, similar to the earlier lovingkindness meditations, is that we start with ourselves first and then move to others. In this lesson – it’s compassion directed towards ourselves then to others.
