Right on Time!

Right on Time!

Under the weather annoyances caused me to attend today’s lesson later than I would normally. I doctored myself up long enough to withstand our lesson and compose this blog, so I thought. I found a comfortable spot suitable for meditation and clicked on to the Lesson 9 Soundcloud recording. You can imagine that I was particularly floored at the irony of today’s topic, Body Sensation Meditation.

The pain that I had been trying to shut a lid on all day, I was now being encouraged to work through it by letting it exist. This approach is very foreign to me because at the first sign of pain, normally a migraine, I quickly close up shop with a nap and meds because I am not functional. My first reaction to the progress mindfulness would make was resistant, even doubtful. As the lesson progressed, I closed my eyes and followed my instructions to the best of my ability. I felt it all and I wish I could say it was extremely easy. With every twinge I kept my breath and when I felt my mind wander, I brought it back with the phrase “Not Breath.”

As I let go of resisting against the uncomfortably, I little by little let go of the belief that working this lesson under the weather was something that I could not endure. I let go of wanting to take the easy route by way of an ibuprofen and a good nights’ rest. My commitment of seeing this thought became less and less of an uphill battle and my body began to relax. When I allowed my body to relax and let it work through what it was going though, I realized that this consistent thing that was happening to me had periods of rest. Half of the ease came from letting go of the anticipation of what was going to happen after my period of rest was over.

I began to understand why this was so important. Avoidance of any kind is a natural reaction to the presence of pain. However, this is not healthy nor does this make it easier to deal with in the long run.   There is always going to be something in life that is happening to us, physical or emotional. It is important and possible to find peace in any circumstance so that life doesn’t seem overwhelming.
