Sharon Salzberg has taught lovingkindness meditation all over the world, and in her newest book she encourages us to strip away layers of negative habits and obstacles, helping us to experience authentic, love-based, direct experience, rather than preconceptions. Sharon will guide us in dispelling cultural and emotional habits and directing focused care and attention so we can recapture the essence of what it is to love and be loved. Insight LA – REAL LOVE – Daylong Workshop

Sharon returns to Insight LA for a daylong immersion on Real Love as part of her Real Love Book Tour in 2017. To love ourselves, we must know ourselves. To love one another, we must know one another. But our assumptions, distractions, fears, expectations, and personal sense of unworthiness obscure these kernels of truth. We yearn for connection with others — but our minds get in the way, constantly spinning judgments about how we are fundamentally alienated from one another.

Lovingkindness meditation is also referred to as “metta,” which means friendship, gentle, or lovingkindness in Pali, the language of the original Buddhist teachings. Metta is like a gentle rain that falls indiscriminately upon everything. It is a steady, unconditional sense of connection that touches all beings without exception, including oneself. The Buddha first taught metta as an antidote to fear, which is still useful for us today. It also helps us develop greater concentration, access fearlessness, and deepen our capacity to love—in a meditation practice and throughout our daily lives.

Spirit Rock LOVINGKINDNESS Daylong

Sharon returns to Spirit Rock in Northern California for two daylong events on Equanimity and Lovingkindness. Join her for one or both events on Saturday, April 2nd and Sunday, April 3rd.

Lovingkindness is a meditation that cultivates our natural capacity for an open and loving heart. It is traditionally offered with meditations that enrich compassion, and joy in the happiness of others, and also deepen our own sense of peace. These practices lead to the development of concentration, connection, fearlessness, and genuine happiness. Sharon Salzberg will introduce these teachings and support us in our own experience and cultivation of these qualities through direct instruction and guided meditation using classical techniques in a modern idiom. There will also be opportunities for questions. This daylong is suitable for both new and experienced meditators. Young Adults (18-26) and Seniors (65+ with limited and fixed income) are invited to attend this day for $30.

In this evening, we will explore the practice of upekkha, usually translated from Pali, the language of the original Buddhist texts, as equanimity. Equanimity can be described as a balance of the mind, a spacious stillness that allows us to accept things as they are, avoiding apathy and indifference on the one hand and driven reactivity on the other. The opening of mind that equanimity brings is the basis for the emergence of qualities such as kindheartedness and generosity. Teaching on equanimity is traditionally offered with practices that enrich compassion, lovingkindness and joy in the happiness of others. Together, these practices lead to the development of concentration, fearlessness, happiness and a greater ability to love. As Sharon introduces us to these teachings, she will support our own experience of practice through direct instruction and guided meditations. The evening is suitable for both new and experienced meditators.
