This immersion provides a special opportunity for those who are interested in or currently using mindfulness in professional settings to dive into practice and share space with one of the pioneers who brought these practices to the United States, Sharon Salzberg. Sharon is one of America’s most well-known Buddhist meditation teachers and authors, and this week she is joined by Judson Brewer, MD, PhD, whose insight into the scientific background of these practices will inspire you with astounding evidence-based information highlighting the profound effects of mindfulness.

1440 Multiversity – LOVINGKINDNESS – Weekend Retreat

Join Sharon at the brand new retreat facility in Northern California for a weekend Lovingkindness retreat. Lovingkindness is a meditation that cultivates our natural capacity for an open and loving heart. Although frequently denigrated in our culture as simplistic and weak, the quality of kindness has an inherent power to transform our worldview from one of fear and isolation to one rooted in clarity, courage, compassion, and genuine happiness. Lovingkindness is traditionally offered with meditations that enrich compassion, joy in the happiness of others, and equanimity.

Lovingkindness meditation is also referred to as “metta,” which means friendship, gentle, or lovingkindness in Pali, the language of the original Buddhist teachings. Metta is like a gentle rain that falls indiscriminately upon everything. It is a steady, unconditional sense of connection that touches all beings without exception, including oneself. The Buddha first taught metta as an antidote to fear, which is still useful for us today. It also helps us develop greater concentration, access fearlessness, and deepen our capacity to love—in a meditation practice and throughout our daily lives.

Retreat Details

Renowned meditation teacher Sharon Salzberg will guide you in the experience and cultivation of these qualities and you will learn:

– The practice of lovingkindness with classical techniques in modern idiom

– The applications and effects of a consistent practice of lovingkindness

– The relevance of right intention, right speech, and right action in cultivating kindness in our hearts and minds.

Step away from the obligations, distractions, and expectations that so often characterize modern life and relax into the energy of lovingkindness toward yourself and all beings. Nourish yourself with compassionate meditations and exercises to soften the heart, relieve stress, and increase your capacity for giving and receiving love. Cultivate qualities of fearlessness, courage, and clarity with meditations that have been practices for thousands of years.

4th Street Yoga WORKING WITH YOUR ENEMIES Workshop

Sharon Salzberg HeadshotJoin Sharon for an intimate evening at 4th Street Yoga in Berkeley, CA exploring how to work with enemies. An enemy, whether within (in the shape of a habitual, painful mind state) or without (as someone for whom we steadily feel antipathy or fear) marks the edge between limited lovingkindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity and the potential boundlessness of these qualities.

In this workshop Sharon will explore inner and outer enemies, look at the fear, anger and anguish generated by being stuck in a mode of “us” and “them”, and focus on the liberation we are capable of. There will be periods of dialogue, discourse, and meditation practice. Suitable for both beginning and experienced meditators.

Insight LA – REAL LOVE – Daylong Workshop

Sharon returns to Insight LA for a daylong immersion on Real Love as part of her Real Love Book Tour in 2017. To love ourselves, we must know ourselves. To love one another, we must know one another. But our assumptions, distractions, fears, expectations, and personal sense of unworthiness obscure these kernels of truth. We yearn for connection with others — but our minds get in the way, constantly spinning judgments about how we are fundamentally alienated from one another.

With core mindfulness and lovingkindness techniques, and other meditation exercises, Sharon Salzberg will guide participants through the process of seeing through layers of habit – whether rooted in fear, self-condemnation or other mental conditioning – to find a truer meaning of love for themselves, for their loved ones, for those they don’t know but with whom they share this planet — for all beings everywhere. Suitable for both new and experienced meditators, the course will consist of guided meditations, talks and time for questions and answers.

Sharon returns to Berkley, CA for an evening talk EXPLORING EQUANIMITY at 4th Street Yoga!

In this evening, we will explore the practice of upekkha, usually translated from Pali, the language of the original Buddhist texts, as equanimity. Equanimity can be described as a balance of the mind, a spacious stillness that allows us to accept things as they are, avoiding apathy and indifference on the one hand and driven reactivity on the other. The opening of mind that equanimity brings is the basis for the emergence of qualities such as kindheartedness and generosity. Teaching on equanimity is traditionally offered with practices that enrich compassion, lovingkindness and joy in the happiness of others. Together, these practices lead to the development of concentration, fearlessness, happiness and a greater ability to love. As Sharon introduces us to these teachings, she will support our own experience of practice through direct instruction and guided meditations. The evening is suitable for both new and experienced meditators.

Spirit Rock – REAL LOVE BOOK TOUR – Daylong Workshop

You are a person worthy of love. You don’t have to do anything to deserve all the love in the world. Real Love is a creative tool kit of mindfulness exercises and meditation techniques that help you truly engage with your present experience and create deeper love relationships with yourself, your partner, friends and family, and with life itself.

Sharon Salzberg has taught lovingkindness meditation all over the world, and in her newest book she encourages us to strip away layers of negative habits and obstacles, helping us to experience authentic, love-based, direct experience, rather than preconceptions. Sharon will guide us in dispelling cultural and emotional habits and directing focused care and attention so we can recapture the essence of what it is to love and be loved. With positive reflections and practices, Sharon teaches us how to shift the responsibilities of the love that we give and receive to rekindle the powerful healing force of true connection. This daylong will include a combination of talks, guided meditation and direction for practice to carry forth the lessons of the day into our daily lives. This daylong is appropriate for all audiences. A book signing will follow the event.
